How to stop cell phone use in the library, permanently.

http://www.thesignaljammer.com/

(or any similar product)

I'm not sure about the legality of these devices, but I know I've heard about movie theaters and other establishments using them.

more newspapers

This quarter i have rarely seen any fresh copies of the NYT by the time i get to it(around 1). I don't know if it's because the group that is ordering them is ordering less, or if they just stopped ordering them completely.

If you guys have some money left in the budget, and are looking for something to do with it, more newspapers would be nice. either give the money to the group on campus or make your own order.

furniture/tables

I'd like to see more comfortable chairs and couches in the library - the existing orange ones are old, gross, and the cushions are flat.

It would also be nice to have more tables and less cubbies in the upper floors - it's much easier and less confining to be able to spread your books/papers out over a table than having to use the tiny cubby spaces.

Database searches are TERRIBLE

WHY ON EARTH ARE THE DATABASE SEARCHES SO SHODDY HERE?! I have spent hours upon hours doing research only to find database searches come up with hardly anything useful. I spent less time researching at my community college! SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE!

Laptop information

Lately I have been seeing alot of people floating about the computer lab next ot the info desk. I am not sure if they are particular about using one of those computers, or just dont realize that tehy could go borrow a laptop at any time. My usggestion would be to post a small map near each of these high traffic areas, telling people where they can chack out laptops, for how long, or where there are other good computer lab locations. For new people confusion could certainly be the case.

thanks!

New Chairs?

I love working in the library, especially the sky bridge. Most of the reason I like the sky bridge is that it is a good place to meet for study groups and is a good venue to meet and talk. However it's hard for me to go to other parts of the library and study in the quieter parts. One of the main reasons I like studying in the sky bridge is the comfy chairs. I hate sitting in the nasty old orange couches/chairs. Some of them are in such a bad shape that they make me itch, yea, and I can't sit on them without fear of a rash (yes it was a rash). Is there any way that we can get new chairs for the other parts of wilson? If there were newer chairs in the other parts of wilson, I would be more inclined to study there.

More comfortable chairs

The chairs in all the areas with tables are narrow and uncomfortable and squeaky. We need more comfortable places to sit and still have a table to work at.
Also, the bathrooms are old and small. The stalls are akward and should be made a little bigger. Sacrifice one stall and make the rest a little bigger!

Buy Eric Wheeler's book!

Eric Wheeler is a Western Student, and he wrote a book and got it PUBLISHED! Why don't we have a copy in the library?!

adobe cs3 books

alot of the technology books on the adobe software are pretty out of date. I would also like to see some more recent graphic design books. It seems everytime i go to borrow a book, its outdated by atleast 10 years. Sort of hard to learn, when books dont even relate to software.

tony's coffee

While I don't think a seperate cafe/marketplace needs to be built, it would be nice if Tony's Coffee in Haggard had longer hours - specifically on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. There ARE actually students in the library who would appreciate having a place to buy a snack/coffee during those times.

noise

The amount of noise in the library has gotten ridiculous, and has reached the point where it is often difficult to find a place where you can study without being disturbed by obnoxious cell-phone conversations, headphone music, loud group meetings, and even whispering. This comes as a consequence of the complete absence of any sort of quiet policy enforcement. There should be designated floors/wings (or more soundproof study rooms built) for group conversations, cell phones, and other sources of noise. Students who don't abide by this rule should be asked to leave.

longer hours

Keep the library open longer. As many have pointed out, the library is the only quiet place to study for many students. The library hours on Friday and Saturday are absurdly short. It would be nice if the Haggard section was open 24 hours per day, and if not that, at least until 2-3 AM.

Dirty desks

The library needs to expand the custodial staff, or do whatever it takes to keep study areas a little cleaner. There's a ring of dirt and grime on the desk surface surrounding the skylight on the 3rd floor of the Haggard side. I find trash and crumbs on desks all the time. It would be nice to have the library a little cleaner. I know it's a public space, so I don't expect it to be like a country club, but it doesn't have to be like Railroad Avenue either.

Quiet Areas

I suggest making the signs for quiet areas WAY BIGGER! Or maybe have some sort of physical marker to remind people they are in a serious studying zone. Also, make the use of I-pods/personal music players a restriction in addition to cell phone use. Most people don't really know how loud those little headphones are when your in a totally silent area. It is SOOOOO distracting! I can't remember how many times I've had to leave and area because other students were talking. I have also had to ask people to be quiet or turn their music down, which is also distracting because people always seem to get mad at you.

I like the fact that there is a cafe in the library, but honestly, the coffee sucks. It is GREAT that it is Tony's, and something more local, but I don't think that SodexHo is properly training their employees on coffee/esspresso drinks. After all, we do live in the Northwest, the home of "coffee snobs"!

It would be nice if reserve time could be a little longer, perhaps 3 hours. Sometimes, you have more than 2 hours of reading to do in one day, and some people can't spend their days in the library waiting to check out and re-check out reserves.

I DO like the fact that the computer labs are open 24 hours. That is very helpful when you have to pull all nighters. Thanks!

More books, please

The collection of the Western Libraries is an amazing resource – the books (a great fiction section of American, British, and Canadian lit), periodicals, and online journal access. And it seems that the staff works hard to manage it all and to serve the patrons, thank you very much.

I appreciate the efforts to expand and feature the Diversity selection.

Thank you for allowing the circulation of periodicals; I hope it continues, though I worry about the wear and tear on the less durable ones – maybe they should be checked out with a cover of some kind.

I would like to see more contemporary fiction and poetry titles, more and continued literary journal subscriptions.

I applaud (with one hand clapping) any attempt at education and enforcement to reduce noise levels in the stacks. Sometimes groups can be so loud that people on their cell phones can hardly hear themselves talk!

Having the Wilson front doors propped open seems like a big waste of energy, and this might contribute to the heat being cranked up so that other parts of the building feel like 451 degrees. Then again, it is nice that fresh air can pass through, and the ninja squirrels should have as much right to come in to hide their snacks and curl up for a nap as the next guy.
