I would love to see more group study rooms with more soundproofing. I remember going to the library to work on a group project and we had to sit in the main room because all the group rooms were taken by the one person.

South Campus drop box= goooooood

More movie selection, with longer checkout= gooooood

Special Collections should be open longer
Library as a whole should be open longer

Also, I've gone into the library needing desperately to print just one thing and EVERYONE has been doodling around on facebook. Can we have "No facebook" hours on library computers from, like 9 am to 3 pm? (and apply it to the color printing room down below?)

Wilson 4 Central needs to make a comeback.

GROUP ROOMS, QUIET, FACEBOOK - LIBRARY REPLY, Aug 2008

Access to the group study rooms on the Wilson side of the library will be significantly different come Fall Quarter.  Here's what you'll see:

  • 13 group rooms that can all be booked in advance!
  • 7 group rooms with large LCD monitor and whiteboard overlay for collaborative work and practicing presentations.  These rooms will have added soundproofing features.
  • All group rooms will require key check-out from the Media Desk allowing more availability for groups.

Quiet - Fall Quarter will begin with a new Noise Management Program and a big promotion to raise awareness about designated quiet areas.  Wilson 5 and 4 Central will be the designated quiet areas with clear and visible signage.  Information will be available at all service points about these areas and the library staff will be at your disposal should enforcement be required in one of these quiet areas.

Facebook - As pointed out in posts below this opens a whole can of worms with regard to where site limiting might end.  The library feels that blocking web sites is never the answer answer and encourages all users to be aware that library stations are provided primarily for research and scholarship purposes.  Other uses are  not prohibited but users need to remain aware of the needs others might have while doing email, surfing or using social networking sites such as Facebook.

don't police content

if you ban facebook, don't you have to ban myspace? what about sites that are not work related. How can the library possibly decide when someone is just goofing around and taking up space and when they are actually working?

as for the color printing room, maybe have a couple computers there that you can only be on for 15 minutes before automatically logging off?

No Facebook

I agree, no facebook.

south book drop and facebook

Emphatic yes to a south campus book drop.
As for banning Facebook...well, I'd hate to see that, since I do most of my computering in the library (I have no internet at home, and the other labs just aren't as comfortable) -- and I've often used wall posts or messages to agree on meeting times for studying (believe it or not, that was ostensibly how everyone's favorite time-waster started, and it can still be used for academic purposes, not that many do...). Maybe there's some way to have any computer on Facebook for more than fifteen minutes flash a reminder to the user that students needing computers for academic use have priority, then automatically log them out after five more minutes still on facebook. Or, make it library policy that if there are students waiting to use computers, anyone just dinking around should log out and get out of the way.

BAN FACEBOOK!

I agree!! How annoying is it to just want to print your homework out, only to have all the computers clogged with those damned facebook-ers! Can we please just have those sites access blocked?

facebook trimmings

I agree with the comment on facebook; there should either be computer labs that don't allow that site, myspace and maybe some other sites that aren't academically relevant either or simply make those sites unavailable at peak usage hours. Too often have I been unable to print work because of people farting around on such sites
