Something I always found weird is that we can print a couple hundred pages per quarter, for free, but if we want to use a copy machine we have to pay out of pocket every time. Are copier ink and paper just that much more expensive than printer ink and paper?

Now, you can get around this, by using a scanner to copy something onto a computer, and then printing it out, for free. The only problem is, that there's a lack of scanners inside the library. I only know of one, and it's hooked up to a very old, slow computer; so copying and printing one pae can take up to 10 minutes.

To remedy this problem, I'd either like students be able to copy a certain number of pages for free, every quarter (like we can for printing). Either that, or it would be nice to have some scanning stations set up in the library, to make things easier to scan and print.

COPYING & SCANNING - LIBRARY REPLY, Aug. 2008

Photocopy machines in the library are not owned or managed by the library.  This is the case with photocopiers all over campus.  That operation is Copy Support Services which is a "cost recovery" unit - meaning they need to generate income to pay for paper, toner, machine replacement, etc.  While on the surface it seems like it would be a logical extension for photocopying to be part of the quarterly student print quota you can probably see there are both technical and bureaucratic obstacles.  To talk more about the cost of photocopying and related issues contact Kathy Tadlock at 650-7969.

Scanners - The library is currently exploring the idea of deploying flatbed scanners on the main level of the library complex.  Our new Dean supports this idea.  Watch for further developments as the school year progresses.

Copy Fee - The idea of a copy fee tacked on to quarterly tuition payment was floated in your blog comments.  As stated above management of the photocopiers is separate from the library.

more scanners

yes, some more scanners would be great for copying journal articles for text, tables, graphs, etc.

Agree

Yes, please!!

That would be amazing!

I agree! I avoid finding books in the library if I can find something simliar through an online subscription because I can just print that off rather than having to pay to make copies.

Copiers

Seriously, I don't know if I'm just stupid or what but I've never been able to get the copier to actually copy something right. If there were a certain number of free copies we could get that would be awesome so I wouldn't waste a bunch of money on useless copies!

Great point.

I agree, I'd even be willing to pay an extra few dollars in tuition to avoid the hassle of running around filling up copy cards. I think this quarter alone I have spent more than 30 dollars on copies, but I have probably only used 200 pages of my quota.

Great Idea!!

why couldn't it be free with a limit on copies? It uses the same paper and ink!

Copies

Yeah, that is a great idea. Give us a combined allotment of copies and printing.

free copies

I agree. In two years, I have never even approached the printing limit, but I have had to spend more than I'd like on copies for classes. If there would be a way to combine these two services, that would be fantastic. Something along the lines of: you have a certain amount of pages for either computer printing or copying.

Yes Please!

Coping should definitely be built into the fees that we pay. It is a resource that should be open just as printing is.

I also agree. While I don't

I also agree. While I don't know the logistics of how the copying systems work in terms of money spent, etc. I do think that having free copies in addition to, or as part of our quarterly allocation for free printing would be well received by most students.

Seriously.

I totally agree with you about the copying fees. If I haven't used up my paper allowance, I should be allowed to get some copies made, it seems like our technology fee and all those other fees would cover this. Is the library just trying to avoid non-students from abusing the machine usage? If so, couldn't we just have a cardscanner tacked on or something? Login in and use like the printers?
