I would go to the library way more often if it would stay open for 24 hours. Alot of people hate the fact that when they have a huge exam or a paper they have to pack it up and leave by 11 and its a hassle to get there and have to worry about leaving by 11 with out being half way done. I realised the whole process wastes my time.

I also dont find it practical to have to turn in the laptop every 2 hours and have to wait for half an hour before I can check it out again. It takes about 10 mins to sign in and about 5 more to find my paper and have to restart typing.

I know that all of the big schools like the UW have 24 hr libraries and people are always there when they need to study!

Thanks

As for the laptop issues posed here...  Short version is that based on comments in the 14 Days blog we took the current laptop policy to the new AS Board over the summer for review and comment.  Previous board members and Student Tech Fee members had helped us set this policy several years ago.

Your board members did a lot of work checking out laptop fines and rules at other universities but in the end recommended by a unanimous vote to retain the current laptop policies.  The only exception was the recommendation of a maximum fine amount of $100.00 which the library has put in place.

2 hour check-outs, waiting period, $10 fines all remain in place.

Longer Hours is a plus

I would love it if the library were open 24 hrs. But realistically I dont think that will happen because of having to finding night crew. If maybe the students need for longer hours and the schools need to reduce spending could meet in the middle that would be great. Library hours could be extended to 2am or even 3am. Just a thought, maybe then everybody could be happy.

Financial Details

Having the library open 24 hours or 6am to 3am (giving the computers a chance to cool down and save some energy in the long run) is almost necessary.
Further, it can be handled in the budget. We don't need the entire library at 1am--just certain parts. A timer could turn off half of the flourecents in the perimeter of the building that would not be used (extra study rooms, sections that don't even have books on the shelves or furniture). I don't think all the lights in a particular room should go out if there is physical access to that room--definitely not safe for a multitude of reasons.
As for staff, why are they needed? Check-out computers can be closed down because the idea of late night hours is studying, not checking out books. The number for campus police can be posted and if something happens that's all we would need. One or two students could work a late shift if necessary--some of us need the extra workstudy hours.

I sort of agree...

A 24 hour library sounds like an awesome idea, however it doesn't seem practical for me from monetary standpoint, plus you'd need to find people who'd want to work night owl shifts...

What I'd want is a library that is open more on the weekends! Just like the comment above, I work until 8:00 and live relatively far away from the library, and I can't seem to find time to get to the library if I'm not already here for classes.

i agree!

i really like this idea :) I work full time in addtion to going to school and i dont live on campus. I don't even get home until 9:30 pm! and if i have to drive to school, its already almost 10. If the library were open 24 hrs, it would make using the facility a lot more convenient for me.
