Laptop information

Lately I have been seeing alot of people floating about the computer lab next ot the info desk. I am not sure if they are particular about using one of those computers, or just dont realize that tehy could go borrow a laptop at any time. My usggestion would be to post a small map near each of these high traffic areas, telling people where they can chack out laptops, for how long, or where there are other good computer lab locations. For new people confusion could certainly be the case.

thanks!

Laptop fines

The fines for laptops aren't at all reasonable. I once rented a laptop and ran into a friend who wanted to go out to eat and get some drinks. Lo and behold I forgot it was in my backpack on the way to his house. I woke up the next morning to find that I still had a laptop in my backpack...$180 down the drain.

I know the library wants timely laptop returns, but $180 for an honest mistake, and the refusal of anyone at the library to even talk about working out a deal to cut the fine is not fair.

Print Quotas

500 pages per student???

I think that the library should reduce the quota to 250 pages or less per quarter.
Western is committed to sustainability practices, yet this policy indirectly encourages students to waste paper.

Read your .pdf's on the computer, scribble your outlines/notes down in the notebook you've already been using, and check your formatting/print settings BEFORE you click "Print."

Martha at the Reference Desk is amazingly helpful and friendly. Thanks, Martha!! :)

Printing & Computers

I think there should be more printing locations, especially in Wilson. It's a bit annoying, if studying in a study room on the 5th floor to have to run all the way back to the skybridge to print.

Also, it would be nice to be able to print files from personal laptops.. A number of times, I've brought my laptop (to avoid the 2-hr limit), and then have to go through a whole process of emailing documents to myself, then finding a Library computer or heading to a lab to print. It'd be nice to somehow be able to link the library printers with the log-in for using the WWU wireless network.

reference computers

Can there be computers just for looking up reference matierals in the reserve section? Whenever I go to use the reference section, all the computers are taken by people doing personal stuff- checking their facebook/myspace. It's annoying when all I want to do is find the book and get out of there, especially when there are tons of computer labs for that kind of stuff!

let's think: do we really need more computers?

A bunch of people have complained about there not being enough computers in the library. I only partially agree with this: yes, there aren't enough computers in the library--but this is only during a very short block of time out of the entire day, during what are called "peak hours". Go to the library on most days before noon and after five and you will have no problems. If we add more computers, for the rest of the time there will just be a bunch of idle computers, when maybe these computers could be placed more strategically around campus.

More computers for the library.

In between classes students are always lining up to use a computer because there are never enough. We should have more computers. Also, add a couple of macs, they are so much more efficient and user friendly. :)

Digitize the Early English Books collection!

I'm well aware that Western does not possess the resources to undertake such a project. However, it's high time that someone sort through the rolls and rolls of microfilm and transfer them into a more easily accessible format. Or at last go through and add the pre-1640 documents to the library's electronic catalog.

As it is, the Early English books are poorly organized, hard to use and almost uncatalogued. It is very nearly impossible to do research on the oldest texts unless you have countless hours to sort through and decode the codices listing where particular pieces are found.

Printing Stations

It would be nice to have more printing stations located in the library, and perhaps paperclips and a stapler remover provided along with the staplers.

lexus nexus

can we get lexus nexus...jstor is great but it generally contains a lot of esoteric and useless papers and such. Lexus nexus can help a larger number of departments with reasearch other than just the social sciences...political scientists, economists, anyone in the business school, all fail to have a database of research materials.
