furniture/tables

I'd like to see more comfortable chairs and couches in the library - the existing orange ones are old, gross, and the cushions are flat.

It would also be nice to have more tables and less cubbies in the upper floors - it's much easier and less confining to be able to spread your books/papers out over a table than having to use the tiny cubby spaces.

More comfortable chairs

The chairs in all the areas with tables are narrow and uncomfortable and squeaky. We need more comfortable places to sit and still have a table to work at.
Also, the bathrooms are old and small. The stalls are akward and should be made a little bigger. Sacrifice one stall and make the rest a little bigger!

noise

The amount of noise in the library has gotten ridiculous, and has reached the point where it is often difficult to find a place where you can study without being disturbed by obnoxious cell-phone conversations, headphone music, loud group meetings, and even whispering. This comes as a consequence of the complete absence of any sort of quiet policy enforcement. There should be designated floors/wings (or more soundproof study rooms built) for group conversations, cell phones, and other sources of noise. Students who don't abide by this rule should be asked to leave.

Dirty desks

The library needs to expand the custodial staff, or do whatever it takes to keep study areas a little cleaner. There's a ring of dirt and grime on the desk surface surrounding the skylight on the 3rd floor of the Haggard side. I find trash and crumbs on desks all the time. It would be nice to have the library a little cleaner. I know it's a public space, so I don't expect it to be like a country club, but it doesn't have to be like Railroad Avenue either.

Quiet Areas

I suggest making the signs for quiet areas WAY BIGGER! Or maybe have some sort of physical marker to remind people they are in a serious studying zone. Also, make the use of I-pods/personal music players a restriction in addition to cell phone use. Most people don't really know how loud those little headphones are when your in a totally silent area. It is SOOOOO distracting!

More books, please

The collection of the Western Libraries is an amazing resource – the books (a great fiction section of American, British, and Canadian lit), periodicals, and online journal access. And it seems that the staff works hard to manage it all and to serve the patrons, thank you very much.

I appreciate the efforts to expand and feature the Diversity selection.

Thank you for allowing the circulation of periodicals; I hope it continues, though I worry about the wear and tear on the less durable ones – maybe they should be checked out with a cover of some kind.

Orange Couches

The orange couches in Wilson are old and dirty... why not replace them with the newer cleaner purple couches like the ones on the 4th floor?

Library noise

I would like to see the quiet areas enforced as actual quiet areas. This means no group studying in quiet areas. The library should be a place people can study in silence, and often this is not my experience. People hold group study sesions, speak loudly to friends and talk on their cell phones in library quiet areas.
The quiet areas should be better designated, enforced, and marked as QUIET.

Lock

I really miss LOCKs in this library; where the readers can lock their books/computer/materials, while they go for example for lunch or for a longer period of classes...
